Devlog 4

This devlog I am going to mainly focus on our in-class activity of turning a sport into a playable board game. This proved to be quite a difficult task because there are a lot of sports to choose from. However, my group and I decided on making competitive tag a playable board game and I would say it went very well so far. The hardest part has been implementing things in the sport directly to the game. According to the video “Making it Matter: Lessons from Real Sports” (5:40) Bennet Foddy states that for games to simulate sports there needs to be a performance to it. Meaning some game mechanics eventually need to become natural that it becomes hard to be replicated by somebody else. We took this into account with our competitive tag as we wanted to create a game comprised of real strategy that could be learned and mastered. Bennet Foddy also brings up another good point when talking about multiplayer games. There is another level of competitiveness or more aspects of the game that are created when you bring in either people to spectate or just a live multiplayer experience (21:16). With some of this information we decided to make our game a four-player game which was a big design change for us and made us create a whole new set of rules but I believe it is for the better because the more the merrier. To use another game method from Bennet Foddy we really wanted to raise the stakes (9:44) of our game to make it more exciting and fun to watch so we added a total turn limit and even began to decrease the movement of certain players as time goes on to balance the game out and make it that much more fun to play.

4-players definitely creates an interesting dynamic in your game because teammates both want to coordinate but also feel they know what’s most advantageous.
