Devlog 6

This week in class we began to go over card games. We learned all about the different types of card games and how to identify them. We then began to play 2 different games with opposite play styles. The first game I played this week was called The Crew. It is a very hard game that requires great teamwork and a little bit of luck to pull off. My only problem with the game was the rulebook. The rules were sort of simple but when it gave examples of how to play it only made the game more difficult to understand and play. It was more like playing dungeons and dragons where you must conceptualize strategies to try and win as a team. The next game we played was a card game called exploding kittens. It is a very easy to understand card trading game where you try and outlive everybody else. The game is centered around trying to screw over the rest of the people you are playing with and there is minimal teamwork involved. There is a bit of luck to it but to be honest it adds to the suspense and makes the experience way better for all the players. Now the reason we played these games is to get an idea of what we want to make our own game based on the theme of travelling. This reminded me of the story of Chris Bell, “Chris Bell was inspired to create Way after getting lost in a Tokyo fish market knowing no Japanese.” (Chapter 9) A fun way to look at creating your own card game is to get “quantity over quality, the golden rule of brainstorming is to come up with as many ideas as possible” (chapter 9-3). Another great point the book brings up is the “how might we” question. “This question is going to be the seed for the brainstorm”. I like thinking that there are no boundaries when it comes to making a card game.

I’m glad you pointed out the “quantity over quality” brainstorming advice because that’s precisely what we’re doing. Between all of the groups, we’ll have had nearly 75 themes and 30 game ideas.
